5 DIY GREENERY ARRANGEMENTS YOU'LL LOVE THIS CHRISTMAS
Christmas greenery doesn’t have to be all about spruce, pine, and cedar—there are so many gorgeous DIY arrangements you can create with alternative plants! While we do love our traditional evergreen garlands and wreaths, we’ve got some creative ideas for Christmas greenery that you’ll really enjoy.
Liven Up Your Christmas Decor With These Alternative Greenery Arrangements
During the holidays, having vibrant and fresh greenery throughout the home never fails to invigorate your space and brighten your mood, especially when it’s cold and snowy-white outside! Get into the Christmas spirit with our simple DIY arrangements using alternative holiday greenery.
Rosemary Mini Christmas Trees
Rosemary is one of our favorite herbs that works perfectly in so many delicious Christmas recipes, but it’s also a beautiful ornamental plant! A small potted rosemary plant looks just like a tiny Christmas tree, with its needle-like foliage and upright, sturdy branches.
Pop a rosemary plant into a Christmas-themed planter, string some delicate fairy lights around it, and you’ve got yourself an adorable mini Christmas tree. They look great as a fresh greenery centerpiece, and if you live in a small space and can’t accommodate an entire real Christmas tree, a rosemary “tree” makes a lovely alternative! Plus, you can always snip off a few sprigs to add a fragrant garnish to your Christmas cocktails.
Fragrant Eucalyptus and Lavender Wreaths
Christmas memories are experiential and awaken the senses—from glittering, colorful lights to delicious home-cooked feasts, frosty cold breezes, and nostalgic music. Of all the five senses, scent is most closely tied to memory and can spark such a warm feeling inside! That’s why we love decorating with fragrant greenery around Christmas.
Eucalyptus and lavender have the most soothing, intoxicating scents, and it’s actually quite easy to weave them into DIY wreaths! Pick up some eucalyptus and lavender cuttings from the greenhouse, use florist’s wire to hold them together, and get a metal hoop, wreath frame, or grapevine wreath around which you can twist your greenery cuttings.
Embellish with Ivy Cuttings
Ivy plants can get really long over summer and fall, so if your plants need a trim, you can use those greenery cuttings to spruce up your home decor! Wrap them around the bases of candle holders, drape them over large mirrors, or twist them around tall floor lamps. Variegated ivy varieties with splashes of white and silver throughout the foliage will look especially festive for the Christmas holiday.
Dried Citrus Garlands
Making dried citrus garlands is such a fun afternoon activity. If you’ve got kids who like to get crafty, get them in on the action! Simply slice assorted citrus fruits, place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, and bake them at 200°F for 2–2½ hours. When they’re ready, poke holes through the top and string them onto some fishing line, making knots along the way to keep the fruits evenly spaced.
Use these garlands to decorate the Christmas tree, or weave them through your existing pine wreaths, garlands, and Christmas greenery for a bright pop of color. For best results, use different colored citrus fruits like lemons, cara cara oranges, and blood oranges.
Mini Terrarium Christmas Tree Ornaments
Tiny hanging glass terrariums look just like Christmas ball ornaments, so why not grab some live greenery and create DIY decorations you’ll want to keep out all year! Fill them with a small bundle of sphagnum moss, pretty pebbles, and a mix of tiny succulents or tillandsia. Hang them on the Christmas tree, and when the holiday is over, you can take your terrarium ornaments off and hang them in the window. They’ll still look stylish, even in summer!
